Quest for PLEX.

I made the huge mistake of installing eve online, I will surely regret it.  The nice bit about eve is that you can go anywhere in the universe without paying.  You’ll get shot up but it’s possible.
They also have PLEX, pilots license extension, which gives you 30 more days of running about.  You can buy them with ISK the ingame money, but they’re expensive.  Usualy running 230+ million ISK.
Of course, nothing is easy.  The quickest way to ISK is mining, but you have to find a field that’s safe enough for your combat/drone skills, better lasers equal better yield, better yield means you need a hauler, etc etc.  And it all costs money.
The upshot is that it’s possible to pull in 1mil+ ISK for each mining adventure.  If you join a corp you could easily make twice that with half the risk.
Early on you’ll be stuck jetcanning, that is jettisoning your cargo into a ‘can’, then filling up the can with what you mine.  The great thing about this is that the jet can has way more cargo space than any of the beginner ships.  Unfortunately there’s a lot of jackasses that like to ‘flip’ your can, either to steal the ore or to get you to fight them.
As soon as you can use/afford giant secured containers, do so.  People can’t flip GSCs.  I’ve got six of them in the field I work, which roughly equals one jetcan.  No flipping, no cargo stealing!
If you’re looking for a timesink in space, eve is a good choice.  Heck, with a 14 day trial you can make lots of ISK and maybe even get a plex.

New firefox default tab behavior, thoughts on why you should use it and how to change it.

I just upgraded to ff 3.6 and did not like how tabs were handled, some quick google’ing led me to This link on CNET. Rather informative.

Sprint picturemail website is useless now.

Jan 21, 2010 @ 06:20 pm by phosphers

Some point last year sprint updated the picturemail website for some stupid reason. Now it’s pretty much unusable with a horrid layout and a lot of clicks to do anything. To make it worse you can’t download all the images in one big damn zip file, you have to download them all individually! BAH! Bad sprint!

Hah, screw you best buy.

Worth a read, Best by “optimization” a waste.

Change $PATH on your chumby.

Chumby is a bit weird and keeps the main profile in /psp/.profile. /psp survives reboots so it makes sense.

DDO and 404/403 errors.

Dec 28, 2009 @ 09:31 am by phosphers

For the sake of poor fools that come looking for a fix to this problem, I’ll post this. DDO uses the .net framework, and the .net framework uses the proxy settings from IE. Yes, this whole issue is due to the proxy. Not sure what exactly the problem is, but if the proxy is enabled in IE you can’t login to the servers (avoid poisoned cache maybe?). The DDO launcher will happily check all the data it needs to launch, and even download/apply updates, but it won’t login and the error it gives really doesn’t help. So there you go, turn off the proxy and you’re good!
